I'm Amy O'hana

Writer & Teacher

I’ll help you reconnect with your love-energy so that you can beat burnout and create a life you love.

An idealistic social worker, I figured I could Handle It.

By the age of 24,
I was burned out

But the truth was, I wasn’t me anymore. Exhausted and unhappy, I had lost my fervor for… everything.

Did I stop to take care of myself? Nope.

Instead, I worked even harder. I went back to graduate school, numbing my needs through achievement. No surprise, I wrote my doctoral dissertation on burnout in an attempt to understand why it wouldn’t go away.

I had unwanted health issues, lost important relationships, and missed out on what really mattered because I felt compelled to work.

Quitting? Not an option. I had bills to pay, plus losing my career would have meant losing a big piece of me. I had to find a way to win at work work while simultaneously feeling the passion I once had.

So I checked into the burnout coaches, read the research, and even wrote a book (Beyond Burnout). All great stuff, but my best answers came… more softly.

Through creativity.

In breath, and in beauty.

And within the indomitable power of the feminine.

Everything changed when I stepped into a love-energy that I, as a woman, I had always known, but one that was not supported in a workforce bossed around by masculinity. I learned the secret to passionately engaging with work and having it all—including the joy and meaning I had misplaced along the way.

Burnout wasn’t the end of my story, and it doesn’t have to be the end of yours. You are the heroine in your own career story. Together, we’ll make it epic!

my life still wasn't working

Fast forward 20 years

Now a powerful career woman—a professional counselor, professor, and author—I love what I do. I’m proud of what I have accomplished. Work is a deep part of who I am and what I have to contribute to the world.

Yet truthfully, for much of my career things weren’t really working. I was wired and tired, unable to rest because my mind wouldn’t shut off.

At Work  ///  off-hours

My Day Planner

Rise and shine! After a short workout, I settle into my grandma’s chair with a cup of coffee, spiritual readings, and my journal.

My power hours, so I work on projects most important to me.

A break to prepare nourishing meals for the day… or tea with a colleague.

On a second burst of energy, I develop curriculum and write emails.

Time for a 20-minute stretch (or nap) on my yoga mat, which is permanently rolled out in my home office.

Tie up loose ends for the day so that I can log off at 5… and I won’t go near my keyboard until tomorrow.

“Me time” and “we time.” Connecting with loved ones is the best part of my day.
